. . . putting a Nativity segment in their Christmas Spectacular.
From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:
. . . to lure spectators of all faiths (and nonfaiths) with the promise of an entertaining holiday revue, and then to ambush them with Christian theology, is dated and borderline offensive, especially at a time when understanding of other cultures and beliefs is more important than ever. The show's creators are wrong to assume that Jews, Muslims and other non-Christians don't have the same right to holiday fluff that Christians do.
I come all the way from ft. worth to see 57 scantily clad dancing girls and they go a smoosh it all up with that dang religious stuff. Don't them yankees know christmas is about santa clause?
Well, that's still better than the Planned Parenthood, "Choice On Earth" Winter Holiday Greeting Card (DON'T YOU DARE CALL IT A CHRISTMAS CARD!).
Ah yes, abortions, that's what Christmas, oops! the Generic Holiday Season is all about isn't it?
As someone said, that was too easy. It's getting so that the Onion can no longer be sarcastic enough to ensure readers know they are kidding. Who can compete with stuff like this?
The Startlegram (as it's known down here) is the most Idiotarian paper in the DFW area. This is interesting, as Fort Worth proper, is more conservative than Dallas proper.
I know there are still women who say as girls they wanted to grow up to be Rockettes, but (why) aren't the Rockettes seen as being equivalent to
blackface?
Well, I can easily imagine the Rockettes twirling their way through the Dreidle song. What WOULD they do for Muslims, though? hip-length burqas?
Well, there's Christmas, and there's "Christmas." The Christian celebration of Jesus's birth on Dec. 25 (and the attendant lack of historicity) can and should be distinguished from the secular, seasonal celebration involving your pagan Yule logs and fir trees and snowmen and whatnot that also, in the Western world, falls under the rubric of "Christmas." Seasonal winter celebrations of the sort have been practiced exclusive of religion for centuries now, in no small part because of the Winter Soltice, the shortest day of the year and the mark of the return to longer days and more sunlight.
Not for nothing, after all, was the celebration of Christmas banned in many of the early colonies. It was the secular rowdiness, not the Jesus tie-in, that was seen as unwholesome.
That doesn't make the Star-Telegram review any less silly, but it is possible -- even desirable -- to have a seasonal celebration, even to call it "Christmas," free of any religious content whatsoever. Certainly it doesn't bother Christians to consider why their major holiday is called "Easter."
I'm not arguing that you can't have a Christmas show without a nativity scene. But arguing that a nativity scene is somehow offensive and inappropriate in a show called the "Christmas Spectacular" is very strange.
First off, I've been away for a while, so this is my first comment since the new site design. Nice job, Jane - and good luck with the new job. I will miss all those Iraqi discussions.
As for the Rockettes, I will share a brief story: my wife and I (both Jewish) saw the show one year on Christmas Eve (the only day we could get tickets - a highly Jewish & Asian audience that night, btw). After the show, we walked over to St. Patrick's Cathedral to see how the church was decorated for Christmas mass. Turns out, in order to get into St. Pat's on Christmas Eve, you need a ticket (given away for free, but typically sold out by the day after Christmas for the following year). People were *royally ticked off.* Many had travelled from great distances & planned to have midnight mass at St. Pat's. The poor guy in front of the church just kept saying, "It's not the church, it's the fire department. We can't let everyone in at once."
My point: For many, Christmas is a deeply religious holiday. For just about everyone, though, it's a very secular, very happy time of year. Those who try to fight against one or the other will *always* be sorely disappointed.
NO CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS!!!!
oh damn that doesn't go over well...
BTW love the hip length burkas.. could the rockettes handle something so restrictive?? clothing on their legs that's not fishnet?
love to see them tour Iran
HAHAHAHAHA
The Rockettes doing a Nativity scene? I'm surprised it wasn't the devout Christians that were offended. 8-)
useless: 'Blackface' was white people pretending to be black, frequently to demean them by portraying them as stupid, lazy, dishonest, etc.
Who are the Rockettes pretending to be, and what negative qualities are they ascribing to the group(s) they slander?
I do agree we need to be more culturally inclusive, though. Some Hannakuh stuff for the Jews, some anti-religous stuff for the atheists, and a nice stoning for the Muslims would clearly be in order.
From reading all of the comments, I can really see that our world is truly far from God's grace. We keep turning our backs from Him and these selfish, vain, self-absorbed emails prove it. It is a shame that our schools must honor jewish holidays and yet Christmas is portrayed as a disgrace. I believe in Judeo-Christian principles and as I see Christmas, God bless it.!! This world is truly full of Ebenezer Scrooges and they have my pity and prayer.
Wow. This United States of ours was founded on our forefathers' Christian principles.
Each individual is entitled to one's opinions, beliefs, traditions, etc. and expressions thereof.
So are the Rockettes.
I for one really enjoy being reminded of the "Christ" part of Christmas. I think the annual Radio City show is beautiful and incorporates both secular & Christian meanings and traditions.
Just like any other theatrical presentation (movie, play, art show, etc.)...if you are offended or outraged you have every right to leave the theatre. Don't try to force your "un-freedom" of religious expression on others.
We just saw the show last night and we all left feeling satisfied about seeing the incredible Rockettes and peaceful that the true reason for Christmas was included. A wonderful program for us non-scrooges. Lighten up!!

Christmas is a christian holiday!
Christmas is all about the birth of Christ (hence the Christ in Christmas. DUH!) You bleeding heart jews got your own holiday, but you don't hear the christians bashing you for it. If it's not about you it must be wrong? NOT!!
As for you athiests and agnostics, I'll bet you a nickel every last one of you give and receive gifts on Christmas. So just give it a rest.

Q: What's the difference between The Rockettes and a circus?
A: One features a cunning array of stunts.
