Okay, I don't like Ben and Jerry's. Not because 2% of their profits goes to buy warm sweaters for the Mediterranean Vole, or whatever cause is the flavor of the week; I just don't like their ice cream very much. I'm a Haagen-Dazs girl, and no, I don't care what sort of politics the folks who brought me Dulche de Leche ice cream bars have, and I thank them for not telling me.
Nonethless, when you see something like Star Spangled Ice Cream, featuring flavors like "Nutty Environmentalist" and "I hate the French Vanilla", you have to be tempted to find out if their product is competitive with the other side of the aisle.

I must say that I tend not to care about the politics of people producing my food products or, indeed, other consumer goods. Who cares what some fat guy in Vermont who makes ice cream for a living thinks about politics, really?
I find B&J's and Haagen-Daz both to be quite good, but rarely buy them because they are so overpriced. Not that $3 a pint would break the bank or anything, but why pay that when you can get excellent ice cream for $4 a gallon or less?
Now, COFFEE at $10 a pound I get. That makes sense.
Strangely enough, Haagen-Dazs is the only kind of ice cream I've ever had that I have actively disliked. Or more accurately, found disgusting. I'm definitely a Ben & Jerry's guy, except the price, and except that they actively seem to avoid having the better flavors in the stores.
There's only ever been one flavor of B&J's that I couldn't do without--From Russia With Buzz. Kahlua liqeur ice cream with White Russian flavored ice-cream (tastes like irish creme) with Espresso chocolate chips. *drool* Unfortunately, I think it's discontinued. Alas.
Ben & Jerry's has a lot of wax and gum and paint thinner and God knows what else in it. And ALL their flavors are aimed at women about to have their periods. Chocolate this, chocolate that...not all of us are retaining water, boys.
Their pistachio ice cream is pretty damn good. Pistachio ice cream tends to have a cult following though. Either you dig or you you don't.

I think B&Js has too much crap in the ice-cream. I like my ice cream crap free. Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla. Generally Butter-Peacan is about as crap-filled as I'm willing to go.
On the other hand Holy-Canolli (which was a limited addition B&J flavor) was to die for. 643 calories for a 4oz serving and worth every bite.
Kidda...Grainy. I don't know, but if you really want to talk about over-priced icecream...Godiva is it. I just don't think it's good enough for the money.

Seriously, the only fault I've ever had with Godiva was that it's too damned rich to eat in normal serving sizes. Which is just as well, since the lack of servings underscores the product's expense. Yet that does offer the psychological buttress of consuming less ice cream.
And in all honesty - I enjoy Edy's quite a bit.

Although I'm a chocoholic, my all-time favorite ice cream is Bluebell's Homemade Vanilla. Y'all might not know of Bluebell, but it's an ice cream company out of Brenham, Texas. *Wonderful* stuff!

There are certain things that are in a different world when you make them yourself: Ice Cream, Beer, Lasagne, Clam sauce, Blue cheese dressing, Mayonnaise, ... If you really want to live the good life work a 30 hour week and put an extra 10 hours into cooking.

No. I think most of us are just fronting as to our picayune palates. I've been known to swing by the nearby United Dairy Farmers outlet for some Blue Moo Cookie Dough whenever possible occasionally.
The best ice cream in the world comes from a small nameless (I think) shop on Swietojanska (St. John) street just of the old market squre in Warsaw. Rich, creamy and bursting with flavor. They don't package it as far as I know, just sell ice cream cones.

I never looked at the caloric information, and I don't plan to. Ever.
For poster #1 - the $76 includes S&H, and as someone who regularly orders frozen rodents (don't ask), I can tell you that dry ice overnight shipping tends to run upwards of $40 even for packages that are fairly light. So the ice cream itself isn't a bad deal...
Haagen-Dazs rules. B&J not only tastes gummy and pushes stupid politics - it's also ALL OVER EUROPE. Great. We try to erase the Ugly American stereotype, and then we plaster charming little towns with parlors full of crappy ice cream created by two very ugly Americans.
Fun game to play with Europeans - Make 'em guess where Haagen-Dazs is made. They have no idea it comes from New Jersey. In fact, they won't believe you until you show them the label on the carton.
4 quarts of regular ice cream from the company that makes "I hate the French vanilla" costs $27. They ship two-day, FedEx, with dry ice involved. I'm thinkin $49 for shipping is a bit much. There's a bit of a profit margin involved there. Either that, or they think the packaging is worth that much extra.
I don't.
