I think it's interesting, for all the blather about left-wing Hollywood, to see just how corporate it is. Virginia Postrel makes a good case that the pre-show festivities were cancelled, not because of the solemnity of war, but because the suits didn't want America to hear how stars speaking out against the war. I noticed that they cut in the "time's up" music on Michael Moore way before the deadline, drowning out the end of his speech. And every time one of the more vocally left-wing stars gets up to the podium, it seems to me that the entire audience is waiting with a stone face until they're sure that the speaker isn't saying anything they don't want to get caught on camera applauding. Hollywood, it seems, is pretty much as willing to trim its ideology to public opinion as any other mass-market industry.

So many stars said that would only come in a back door or not at all. So the pre-show festivities were cancelled.
They have the courage to stand for rape squads, torture chambers, and baby shredding. But they don’t have the courage to walk 75ft.
Actually, it was an excuse to avoid facing
Joan Rivers. "What are you wearing?
What are you wearing?" To the "stars",
that's the height of terrorism.
The mainstream US news media tend to do the exact same thing, with the obvious exception of Fox the majority lean to the political Left and vote Democratic right up until the moment such stance would threaten the money.
Not that Fox is any more objective; they merely discovered they could quickly break into an established market, and hence the same money, with greater ease by starting from the Right in the first place.
Non Hollywood people...
It's "Who are you wearing?"
I think there's a division among the celebrities and among different strata of hollywood. Older actors are either smarter, and as such support liberating Iraq, or they are from that generation that simply didn't question the President when troops were on the line. (That was enough to move Sinatra over to the Republican party.)
Also, behind and above the camera, there is more conservatism. (Remember that Sean Penn brayed about how his stance was keeping him out of the roles he wanted.)
Also, remember that the stars aren't standing up for Iraq. This has never been about Iraq. This is about liberal guilt and distaste for Republicans. It's people who actually get a taste of Iraq (such as the human shields) who are violently reframed and persuaded to switch sides.
This is why I only care about the Porn Awards.
