I've written a piece on Tech Central Station bidding farewell to my favorite senator.

I think it was a shame that he lacked the courage of his convictions. It is unfortunate that, unlike Zell Miller, he couldn't bring himself to leave the liberal plantation when voting in the Senate even when he knew the harm his votes would cause.
We know he despised the Clintons. Yet when Hillary chose to run for Senate, he swallowed his true feelings and played the part of the loyal liberal soldier at her announcement.
Just one more time he had to choose between doing what he thought right or placating his liberal friends. He couldn't bear to anger his friends, so he folded.

Remarkable essay. I'm sending it to my friends because I can honestly say I can't do a better job paying tribute to the man.

I can't ultimately agree with your sentiments. Senator Moynihan was a liberal. Only a liberal in the sense that the rest of us have grown used to not expecting: someone who values liberal goals and ideals over liberal ideology and electoral success. Now think, if you, at the pit of your gut, believed that activist government was a good thing (and I doubt I could find many people who could execute it better than Moyniyhan), who would you favor in the 2000 Senate election?
