Tax and Spend

I have a piece up on Tech Central Station today about the disastrous budget plans of my beloved state and local governments.

Jane, in case you missed it, there's a wonderful article on the Albany legislative process in the newest New Yorker. It was quite an eye-opener!

George Gilder has sometimes been spectacularly wrong, but he summed this issue up quite succinctly: "Taxes do not redistribute wealth; they redistribute taxpayers."

Maybe it's a deliberate ploy to make New Jersey the next terrorist target?

Seriously, as an Australian it reminds me of when the state of Victoria had estate taxes, and Queensland did not. Result was 1000 high net worth individuals PER WEEK moving to Queensland. Victoria eventually gave up trying to fight and dropped the death tax.

I pity the poor soul who moves to New Jersey for the lower taxes and smaller bureaucracy. It's like moving from the Ninth to the Eighth Circle of Hell.

New York City citizens prefer listening to politicians lying to them about free lunches. They are similar to alcoholics who have yet to hit bottom. These folks are barely ready to admit the need to buy a cheaper brand of beer. Unfortunately, they won’t likely listen to common sense until compelled to drink sterno strained through a dirty sock mixed with coca cola!
