CNN is reporting that the Army may have killed Saddaam's sons.
Update It seems to be confirmed. That's an enormous blow to the remaining Saddaam loyalists; it's not likely he can found another dynasty at his age. Plus one imagines they feel the noose closing in. . . perhaps it's time to explore those attractive time-share options in Baja?

On a related note, would it be in poor taste to name my dogs Qusay and Uday?

That depends. Are they pets or "participants" in Pacific Rim cuisine?
I wouldn't do it. An insult to the canine species.
Killed?
I had hoped some opposition group would have captured them for a few months before killing them.
I certainly hope these early reports turn out to be true, but we thought we had Saddam, Chemical Ali and others, before.
I hope they can be positively identified. It would be awful to have some charred bodies that we think might be them.
Charred bodies aren't a problem with DNA testing. Fried Ashes might be tricky.

We didn't get Chemical Ali?
I must have slept throughout the retraction period!
"We didn't get Chemical Ali?"
Damn! And they already blocked him out on the playing cards.
Ah, well, I'm not sure there has ever been a retraction, but I believe it's still not 100% sure he was in that crater.

If there has been positive ID I've missed it.
On your dynasty comment, Megan, I read one report which said Saddam is believed to have another son and three daughters, all of which keep a low profile.
Realistically, I agree, Qusay and Uday were the heir apparent and the spare (tho which was which was not crystal clear). I'm glad they're not running around, but would have preferred a capture. Of course we wouldn't have fed them into a shredder to get information from them; might have talked about it, tho.
Patrick,
I keep reading that we could confirm identities of Saddam, Osama, &c. "through DNA testing," but I've never understood how. Presumably we would need something to compare the sample with. Have we really got little bits of Saddam, Uday, Qusay & friends locked in a deep-freeze somewhere? And even if we do, wouldn't this be the easiest thing in the world to fake?
