silhouette3.JPG From the desk of Jane Galt:

They've captured some of Saddam Hussein's bodyguards.

The interesting part of the story: there were informants telling us where they were, and Saddam seems to have caught and executed them. He and his sons were running around under the noses of the troops.

Saddam is also definitely (ahem) a few cards short of a full deck:

The bodyguard said that Saddam and his sons had remained in Baghdad in the genuine belief that they could hold the city. Only later, when they believed they had been betrayed by their commanders, did they consider an alternative. “The resistance was not factored in before the war,” he said. “There was a closed meeting five or six days after the war, and that is when they began to discuss the resistance.”

If he still thinks the reason we won is that he was betrayed by his commanders, rather than, say, the several-orders-of-magnitude greater firepower, he's nuttier than we thought.

We all know that he killed anyone he felt like killing in painful and ingenious ways. And he was doing that for over 20 years. Somehow I don't find it surprising that he doesn't have a clear picture of the real situation.

Not to say that this doesn't make him act crazy, just that it's understandable if he has a worldview that doesn't have anything to do with reality.

Saddam Hussein’s days are numbered. My guess that he will be dealt with in less than the next two weeks. The Iraq situation is looking very good. President George W. Bush will go down in history as the leader needed to combat our national enemies. Iraq already has the greatest press freedoms of any Muslim dominated nation. Iraq is well on its way to becoming a democratic country. It will require little direct help from us in probably five years. Thankfully, many of its citizens are not religious nut balls. Iraq may even more secular than Turkey. This dramatically increases the odds for a successful transition.

Thank God that President Bush resides in the White House. Al Gore would have basically sat on his hands disgracing himself and our great nation. He would have relied too much on the opinions of the lowlife Old Europeans and our Canadian “allies.” A few Democrats did the right thing, but far too many embraced appeasement policies which would have further endangered us. The left wing of the Democrat Party is not worthy of leadership. These race baiters, quasi-socialists, and weak foreign policy advocates deserve only our contempt.

PS: Senator Joe Biden’s nauseous rhetoric about our alleged need to involve the United Nations more in the affairs of Iraq is enough to make me want to puke. The UN is often little more than a collection of scum bags of the lowest caliber. We are, by default, the savior of the world. This is definitely not preferable, but it is the cold reality.

I dunno, we thought he was pretty nutty to begin with.

Obviously we would have won the war regardless, but apparently he really was betrayed by some of his commanders, who just gave up. So, you know, there appears to be at least a tenuous grasp of reality still there.

(Of course, as I recall he thought he could win the first Gulf War too, despite mucho advice from the Russians that he was crazy to think so. I guess he didn't change much in 12 years.)

Saddam was betrayed by his commanders...and their subordinate officers...and the regular Iraqi soldiers beneath...and the general Iraqi public. Basically, the SOB can't bring himself to admit that almost no one wanted to fight for his wretched regime other than die-hard Ba'athist/fedayeen types and a motley rent-a-jihad crew imported through Syria. If they had, I suspect that the war would've much uglier for us, given the moral straitjackets we place on ourselves these days regarding civillian casualties.

Btw, this is kind of the polar opposite of how Hitler reacted to defeat, blaming the German people when they'd given him their full support.

Kevin, remember that Saddam has been saying he did win the first Gulf War. If you say something often enough, people believe you, and you start believing it, too.

"If you say something often enough, people believe you, and you start believing it, too."

In that case, I'm more attractive than Brad Pitt!!!

I don't care if everyone believes it or not. Just a few models will do.

Kevin,

Not only did Saddam think he could win the first war. Officially, he thinks he did because he survived it.

Hey I survived the 1st Gulf war too. I did so by being on the other side of the planet. Does this mean I won it too?
