A new industry is born

The target price at which it is believed that people will pay to have their genomes sequenced is apparently $1,000. But the cost curve still needs a little work: the current price tag is $50,000,000. While that's down from the billions it cost to sequence the first one, the market is probably somewhat rarified at current prices.

So, if I'm doing the math right, if Moore's Law causes the cost to drop by 50 percent every year, then we'll reach $1000 in about 2020. My guess is that we'll get there sooner, though.

Of course, there's always the Do It Yourself route. This article from the BoingBoing guestblog talks about a guy sequencing his own DNA with a machine picked up off Ebay for $500. I can't help but suspect the real price is a lot lower than quoted in the Yahoo article.
