Gloating is such an ugly emotion . . .

And yet so very enjoyable. This Weekly Standard piece by Jonathan Last is a perfect example of the new term my co-worker has coined: Deanenfreude.

Hardcore supporters are always the last to give up. That's what makes them hard core.

A quick look at the web will find people who think that Clinton did not really win in 92 or 96. They are still fighting that battle!

What surprised me about the hardcore Deaniacs is how few of them there turned out to be. The immense majority of Dean supporters, the ones that only a month ago had him at 30% or 40% in the polls, got over him very fast. They voted for Kertry or Edwards and don't seem to be complaining.

This article could have been written about every losing campaign in the history of elections. They all have people that will not lose hope even when it's clear there is none.

The Deaniacs will pose a problem for the eventual nominee: When the game is up they will pack their enthusiasm and go home. Sullen and somewhat disillusioned, they will be difficult to bring on board the Big Bus To The White House.

Will the eventual nominee need them? In the last election a mere handful of votes decided the outcome. Large numbers of the very-left wing of the body politic either sat home or voted for Nader----Al Gore, it seems, was "too Conservative". I dunno if the upcoming election will be that close, but 2000 should silence the "my vote doesn't really matter" crowd.

Cheers,

DD

But aren't the majority of Dean supporters in states that haven't had their primaries yet? If Dean stays in as he insists he will they may still have an effect.

Does anyone else find the article's descriptor of Arnold as "arch conservative" hilarious?

My uncle (a Dutchman) always uses a German phrase in these circumstances:

"Schadenfreude ist die beste freude" (sp?)

I think that says it all.
