A Stiff Dose of Schadenfreude

Dr Atkins was obese and suffering from heart disease. His doctor says it wasn't due to his diet.

Personally, I have no medical opinion. But I think that when a diet guru has heart and weight trouble, it's okay for the rest of us to gloat. A little, anyway. Especially since it didn't ultimately kill him.

If you don't remember my brief saga with Atkins, click through and take a gander.

I'm starting to understand why el Presidente hammered on the "context" issue with Russert this weekend. Context does not seem to matter to critics any longer.

I heard this being discussed on the radio just a few minutes ago. Evidently the doctors group who released this information is backed by PETA. It also was reported that the release of the information violated Dr. Atkin's right to keep his medical information confidential (no word his family gave permission for release of the data). Not sure if there is a link to support the charge that PETA is behind this, but I would not put it past them.

Cast another vote of surprise on the choice of title for this post. A bit malapropos, I shouldn't wonder? I hardly think it a cause of pleasantry that a person should suffer such severe physical complications from a simple infection. Something equally unfortunate could happen to any of us.

Here is a good article about PETA in todays National Review Online.

Seems like more BS from PETA. Geez....not enough to want to control others but to lie about it too.

I agree with your stand as to each his own when it comes to diet choices. I don't care if you're vegan, vegatarian, Atkins, or whatever. Just don't tell me how to live my life.

One advantage to being married to a nurse who spent years in a cardiac unit is that you pick up a little knowledge through osmosis. The news said he had cardiomyopathy, which is a viral infection of the heart unrelated to his diet. If I remember correctly, side effects from the disease and treatment is weight gain.

PETA sucks...

The information was not cleared for by release by Atkin's widow, and the NY state medical examiner is looking into pressing charges against the Nebraska doctor who requested the information.

Atkins gained 60 pounds while he was in a coma; that much is documented.

The Atkins diet *does* work, but most people are not willing to give up most carbs indefinitely. I lost 30 pounds on Atkins, and gained it all back (and then some) when I decided that I liked potatoes, bread, and coke too much to give them up.

Whoops, that should read "Atkins'".

"Atkins gained 60 pounds while he was in a coma; that much is documented."

Then again, there was a recent kerfuffle over Mayor Bloomberg's on-the-record-off-the-record comment that he'd seen Atkins before the man's accident, and that Atkins was fat.

"The 61-year-old billionaire added that Atkins was "fat" and served "inedible" food at his Hamptons home when Bloomberg visited."

My goodness. Your poor judgement is unbounded. If you really needed to blog this you might have pointed out, as others have, that Atkins weight gain was temporary, and the direct result of medical problems unrelated to his diet.

You might also have pointed out that the BMI is a particularly poor indicator of weight problems -- especially for people who are in great physical condition. Many NFL and MLB players, for example, are obese according to the BMI.
