So I'll be in LA next Friday, on my way back from Mexico. I have been asked to hold a little get-together, but stupidly can't find email addresses for any of the bloggers I know in LA, so . . .
If anyone wants to suggest a bar near the airport (our plane doesn't get in until 7:30 PM, and we leave bright 'n early the next morning), we'll be hosting a little impromptu LA blogger bash.
(By 'hosting', I mean smiling gaily at you as you walk through the door. Sadly, my travelling companion and I will no doubt be flat broke from all those little drinks with umbrellas in them, and will thus be unable to buy drinks the way we'd like to if only Uncle Buffett would leave us his money.)

I hate drinking in airports. It reminds me of drive-through window dining; I'd almost always rather skip eating altogether. That said, sometimes one must make do. This will no doubt offend some, but L.A. has always struck me as a 2nd rate drinking city, compared to N.Y. or Chicago, and even some much smaller towns. When my energy levels were higher, there were many times when I prolonged a trip to N.Y. or Chicago an extra night, and happily sauntered out of a gin mill shortly before dawn, and grabbed a cab to the airport. When leaving Los Angeles, however, I usually grabbed the first flight out, even if it meant the red-eye.
Now, anything past 1 A.M. is a big night out, but if anybody has a suggestion for my next L.A. trip, it would be appreciated. The last time I was there, I was talked out of going to see Etta James in West Hollywood, and ended up in some hell-hole near the Santa Monica pier, where it cost me $40 to get my companion and I through the front door, and I was subjected to crappy music and overpriced Maker's Mark. The Horror, the Horror......

I recommend it. The best way to describe it is that you feel like you are in the set of "men In Black". its a great place to kill time at LAX.
If you are up to going offsite a bit, I recommend Jerrys Famous Deli in Marina Del ray ( 5 miles north- taxi service from LAX is very good) or Chan Darette also in Marina Del ray.
I'd be happy to host you, but I'm 400 miles too far north for that.

outstanding Thai food! great ambiance.
I'm sure there are expensive bars near LAX or fairly nearby in Marina del Rey. A little further on is Venice. Playa del Rey has bars too. Post a message to lablogs.com and I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions. If you're open to something like live guest blogging from a public WiFi access point, or doing something a little more strange than going to a bar, I might be able to help with that.
I highly recommend the Bar in the middle of LAX for its kitch star-trek-60s-modern theme. Almost like a bar in Tomorrowland at Disney World. My spouse and I went their for drinks and appetizers before while we were in between flights on our way to Australia. We had a blast there.
If Orange County bloggers count, my e-mail is pejman64@msn.com.
El Segundo is a lot closer than the Marina. The Stick and Stein?
Holey Moley - The Stick and Stein! you dont want to scare the poor girl, she is from outta town for cryin out loud!
On the other hand, shes from New York, she can handle a bunch of aerospace guys from Hughes ( er, uh, I mean Boeing...) throwing back a few on their lunch hours.
I completely forgot about that place.........
I'd like to second Chandarette, if time allows. Nice place, quiet, good atmposphere, good food, a straight drive up Lincoln Blvd. from the airport.

El Segundo tends to die down pretty early, though you might try the McCormick & Schmick's on Rosecrans.

Separate bar, nice outdoor patio, just a bit further than Stick & Stein, and fewer of us weird aerospace guys. ;)
My regular place is Richmond Bar & Grill, but it's beer & wine only, pretty small, and closes relatively early. And I'll be on business next week as well.

My dear Ms. Galt: I have been entertained and edified by this blog for over two years. If you imagine that you would ever be allowed to pay for drinks while in LA, you are sorely mistaken. Not on my watch.
Definitely go to Encounter in LAX -- very trippy, and as someone said Star Trek meets tomorrowland meets Our Man Flint.
Food isn't terrible either.
According to xrlq, the Bear Flag league is having a gettogether on March 5. I have no idea if the time of day matches up with your schedule or even if the location is at all reasonable for you. http://xrlq.com/MT-Archives/001701.php
