Thus I should have predicted, but somehow failed to, that the Senate would already be holding its first hearings on Vioxx.

Senator Grassley was mouthing off about the hearings on CNBC this morning.
My neurologist says that ibuprofen is worse on the heart than Vioxx.
As someone who reviewed endless on the cox-2 platform (Celebrex, Viox and Bextra are cox-2 drugs) , as well as studies comparing the benefits and risks of all pain relievers, anti-inflammatory and otherwise...
We don't reall know. All we can do is test, observe, and keep trying...BUT
The thing you should know is that drugs targeting arthritis are considered Blockbuster drugs (Searle was overjoyed when they passed Viagra in sales, that was the benchmark, not efficacy).
Trust no one, mistrust no one, but know the motives, the drug industry motive is to sell drugs, not to sell effective drugs, but marketable patented drugs. This does not make them bad, this just makes them human.
Once you know that, proceed with open mind, and tread cautiously.

I took Vioxx for six months prior to a hip replacement and it was the only pain med that worked, including narcotic pain relievers. I'm very sorry it is off the market because pain is pain and any relief is great.
