This reminds me of the other extremely ironic article I ran across this weekend: "When the Anti-Choice Choose" http://www.prochoiceactionnetwork-canada.org/articles/anti-tales.shtml

That's not irony.

This is irony:

speedwell: That's up there with drug prohibitionists smoking crack. "When the Anti-Choice Choose" is crying out for a documentary film.

speedwell and Mike:

I haven't clicked on the link yet. Is it about how public school teachers send their kids to private school at such a higher rate than the general population?

Posted by: tautala on May 2, 2005 3:25 PM

And they characterize Sweeney as an insurgent. Was he setting of roadside bombs?

John, that wouldn't be irony, it would be hypocracy.

Posted by: Mike Linksvayer on May 2, 2005 3:30 PM

John Thacker: Nope, it's about anti-abortion protesters getting abortions ... and going back to protesting abortion the next day! They see their cases as unique. It should be illegal for everyone else.

Beware annecdotes that can't be confirmed. If you retain that level of cynism, then the abortion irony amounts to an urban legend.
As far as the AFL-CIO victims, I'd be interested in knowing what type of severance package they were getting.

Reminds me of that campaign in Louisiana to raise the minimum wage. They filed a request for exemption from having to pay their campaign workers minimum wage; in the request, they wrote that part of the justification for the exemption was that if they had to pay minimum wage, they wouldn't be able to afford to hire as many workers.

The most ironic part of the article is this:

In addition, Raynor said, the AFL-CIO funds an employee retirement health care program out of general revenue. The cost of the program is rising significantly and would grow even more with layoffs, while the total number of union members who pay dues for operating expenses is declining, Raynor said.

multiple, low detail, anonymous anecdotes aren't data.

so on one hand we have names, dates, and locations for specific allegations against unions. on the other we have no names, vague locations and dates, with no attribution to writer, witness, or actor wrt pro-life protesters. people if you are going to try and have an argument, at least come armed with some actual facts.

can you find ironic or hypocritical situations from actors/activists on the right? sure. have you? no. go home and try again, after you finish at the sit in. maybe have a shower, too, swampy!

We shouldn't be any more shocked at the AFL-CIO's
hypocrisy than we are (or should be) shocked by
various Chamber and NAM types who preach smaller
less intrusive government but plump for subsidies
for their businesses. I'd love to have a $1 for
every conservative businessman who told me that
he wouldn't be seeking handouts except that it's
a "way to get back some of my taxes." Nice society we have where everybody walks around with
his hand in another's wallet.

...wonder if they'll try outsourcing?

Cackle!

exactly. the link sounds like penthouse letters - textual porn for liberals which was too good to check.

From: "When the Anti-Choice Choose" http://www.prochoiceactionnetwork-canada.org/articles/anti-tales.shtml

"I once had a German client who greatly thanked me at the door, leaving after a difficult 22-week abortion. With a gleaming smile, she added: 'Und doch sind Sie ein Mörderer.' ('And you're still a murderer.')" (Physician, The Netherlands)

I thought I understood the point of these anecdotes until I came to the German woman's comment (above). Who wouldn't hire an assassin if murder-for-hire were legal?

Posted by: markm on May 4, 2005 7:47 AM

Carbonel: Anyone who understands that murder is wrong, whether or not it is legal.
