Dave and Discourtesy

Sounds like Jimmy Swaggart preaching monogamy.

Sounds like Dave Whiner to me, but I wasn't there.

"...because he doesn't believe in hierarchies."

Hierarchies are intrinsically unavoidable. One can deny reality, but ultimately some people are higher on the totem pole than others. Even the most egalitarian group will tacitly decide who is top dog---and who ranks at the bottom of the pack.

I always thought that the legend of King Arthur's Round Table is a perfect example of the inevitability of hierarchy. The table, we are told, was round by decree because Arthur intended that fact to demonstrate that all who sat at it were equal. But you just know, when they all sat at the table, well, he was King Arthur, who had drawn the Sword from the Stone, and the rest of them...weren't.

When I saw Insty's photo with the caption, "Dave Winer lectures on civility", I snorted and said, "What does Dave Winer know about civility?"

Posted by: Jay on May 8, 2005 1:15 PM

"There is no civility. There is only politics."

Donboy: Not only that, but there was considerable competition for who sat a King Arthur's right and left = #2 and #3 in the heirarchy of "equals". Someone's always going to be "more equal than the others."

I normally pay no attention to stories or blogs pertaining to blogging; flatulent self-importance and navel-gazing is too often the result. I read about this episode, however, because the notion of a moderater of a conference pertaining to civility throwing a hissy fit struck me as kinda funny. After reading Den Beste's and Mindles' links, I fear that this Winer fellow may need to greatly increase the lithium dosage. Who stole the strawberries, indeed....

Fussy little maroon, isn't he?
