The Henry Hudson--the highway nearest my house, which I travel up and down at least a few times a week--has been blocked by a landslide.

Landslides are too SoCal for New York. Frankly, I expect more a bit more originality in New York -- rat infestations, water main breaks, blackouts, disappointing revivals of classic musicals -- but landslides! Really.

We drive past the area that collapsed twice a day. Apparently it started to collapse an hour before it completely caved in - Mrs. Manhattan was driving by right about the time it started.

ABC this morning did their best to spin this into a "decaying infrastructure" story, puttting blame on Federal budget and tax cuts.

Looks to me more like simple local neglect and incompetence.

Far from being an example of neglect, I've heard witnesses that a very large man was sitting on a park bench eating a Monster ThickBurger just before the retaining wall collapsed.

They're only build to withstand so much pressure before failure, you know.

The Amtrak train bridge to Jersey also caught fire last night. Apparently the man upstairs is upset about something.

Well, based upon that logic, the landlord upstairs has been mightily irritated with Amtrak since it's inception. Who knew?

If anyone wants to see what the scene looked like a few hours after the bulldozers arrived, click here for a 1.5 gigabyte JPEG record of the view from about 30 yards east and 12 stories up. The collapse is about four blocks north of the George Washington Bridge, where 182nd would be if 182nd went all the way to the Henry Hudson Parkway. (I'm visiting friends in New York this weekend, and am just glad they don't live on the first floor, since the bulldozers and dumptrucks are working round the clock, and it's hard enough to sleep on the 12th floor. Their 10-year-old saw it happen, but didn't have time to grab a video camera.)
