Is there anything more enjoyable for an upper West Sider than bashing fairway? I too, am loth to brave the legions of aggressive old ladies hitting you with their shopping carts should you linger in the produce aisle, and cashiers who seem to regard customers as an apalling inconvenience who should be discouraged at all costs from their bothersome insistence on paying for their goods.

We are devotees of the 133rd St. store, which has none of the faults mentioned in the article (everyone there is very service-oriented). Of course, you pretty much need a car to get there - which is why it's so popular with people from other areas of the region.
I switched to FreshDirect last year and couldn't be happier... no cars means no competition and you're hostage to whatever happens to be in walking distance. Delivery services actually have an incentive to keep your business.
Don't be so timid! Fairway remains awesome with great product at great prices; albeit in a full contact setting.
Do you scold cabbies for not using their turn signals?
Also, those little old ladies look mean, but they're really pushovers. Piledrive one little old lady and the rest fall into line, with only the occasional atomic wedgie necessary to maintain discipline.
With respect to the article: that guy should have just taken his damned food out of the basket already. What an asshole.
I generally don't go shopping, as it is a man's job to provide me with dinner, and therefore he generally does all that kind of grocery stuff, but when I have gone to Fairway with him I find that just yelling out "EXCUSE ME" while plowing in a stright line works very well...and it's cathartic too. You would be surprised how spry those old ladies can be.
Husband says it's rude, but what does he know, he's from New England.

I rather think that this is a bit of NYC street theater - - worth a look, a shake of the head, and a wry observation that, unlike the players in this amusing spat, most people grow up as they age. Even on the upper West side.
I have recently started using Fresh Direct. Fairway does have its merits, though (for example, having much less expensive produce and a better selection and a slightly less expensive meat and fish department). But, I have always been a much bigger fan of Zabar's. Cheese, Deli, Prepared Foods, and Smoked Fish sections are all much much bigger at Zabar's than at Fairway. Also, none of the annoying and incompetent cashiers.
You know that the economy is doing well. The cashiers at Fairway have gotten ruder and more incompent. A wave of layoffs ought to put them into line.
