Okay, so I don't actually have a potato gun, an omission for which I plead the exigencies of a 450 square foot flat in a metro area rather too densely populated for spud cannons. But if I did have one, the authorities could have it when they pried it from my cold, dead hands. Stay strong, Dr. Helen.

I loved the proposed solution:
"Gail Bradshaw subsequently asked North Saanich council to ban the sale of PVC pipe to minors."
A sound like a gun being fired? BS, a potato gun sounds nothing like a firearm. More whoomph. Also most are less dangerous than a fastball, because potatoes are softer.
Firing a potato gun in the middle of a city? Stupid! Go to a park, people.
Buying a potato gun instead of making one? That's half the point!
If a potato gun broke this window, the window would have to be pretty weak. I call BS again.
Finally, tesla coils > potato guns.
In the combox in Dr. Helen's post, check out the pumpkin cannon that is linked there. Pretty cool.

I can see residential-grade window glass being broken by a potato gun, provided we are talking about the full-size model that chucks entire potatos. Hint: potatoes only become soft after baking.
Other business:
A great way to completely end a failing microwave (in this case, the magnetron was throwing sparks into the main chamber) is to use it to accellerate a 3-liter dry ice bomb. Sadly, I wasn't present, but I got to see the video footage a couple weeks later.
"If a potato gun broke this window, the window would have to be pretty weak. I call BS again." Raw potatoes are as hard as a baseball, and can be considerably heavier. I could certainly break a window by throwing a medium-sized potato at it, and I was always the last one picked when they were picking teams for any kind of ball game. If the gun can't give a higher velocity than my arm, it isn't worth much.
