This is cool . . . except I'm not really clear why it's better than regular contact lenses.

I gave up on contacts because my eyes got scratchy and dry near the end of a long day. If the effects lasted a full day (not worsening near the end) and the lenses were comfortable to sleep in, I'd think this would be better for me than regular lenses.
I don't know if you ever have worn contacts, but especially in a big city, the general pollution take a toll on the eye, and the contact both, even semi-rigids. Wera them at night in the controlled environment of a closed eye, and I can imagine that they would be more servicable, and your eyes would be happier. My eyes stopped changing, once I was wearing semi-rigids, though my allergies have put the kibbosh on that now. But I think the effect of change is pretty well understood...
Wow. I remember writing a story about this in my college newspaper. That was in 1977....
Probably better because the main problem with contacts is daytime upkeep--if you only wear them at night and they change your eye shape, you don't mess them up.
Color me dubious. It's okay to sleep with them because they're gas permiable. My best friend is a doctor who wore contacts until she slept with them in too many times and got a horrendous eye infection. Several times. Her contacts are gas permiable.
Seriously, I was going along all, 'hmmmm...interesting concept...' until they got to that line and then I just gave up.
I used ortho-k lenses back in the late 80's. Unfortunately they weren't all that successful in my case, improving my vision but not enough to get rid of my day-time lenses.
For me the biggest bother of contacts is putting them in and taking them out. That's why I typically wear them for months at a time (greatly irritating my doctor). So this doesn't seem like it would make my life any easier, though it probably would result in healthier eyes.
Good point, Christina.
By only wearing them at night, the better analogy is it is like wearing a retainer than to having braces.
So, what would happen if you kept them in for a really long time? (Other than the obvious response from your doctor, I mean.)
if really long time is the same as never cleaning, then you are asking for an infection, and/or eye damage. The eyes DO periodically need to get that uncomfortable plastic thing off of them... the design determines the time. Semi rigids need to be cleaned every day, AFAIK, but I used to wear them 18hours for all of that...
