Going from this to this still feels like a tragedy, not a triumph.

The 'after' looks like a textual impressionistic expression. There is compelling content, there is a recognizable shape, and layers of nuance.
I didn't particularly admire his work from before the stroke, and don't particularly enjoy the aphasic narrative. I do admire the complexity, the broad brush of expression that builds subtle communication from almost-clumsy structures.
I would not call this a triumph, but it is a particularly poignant and wonderful structure.
It's a triumph only to those who deny the existence of mental deficiency, a meme I've been hearing since the sixties.
Jeff D is correct- one does not exist without the other.
I'm reminded of The Man with a Shattered World.
Aw, don't feel bad. Guess he crossed over to that lucky class made up of the old and sick. Bummer. Do you think he was needy, deserving, unlucky, or do you think his ill health was culpable negligence? Maybe he just got old in high style. Whatever.
