Fed up with doomsayers predicting

Fed up with doomsayers predicting terrorist disaster or imminent theocratic assault by the Republicans? Try this one on for size: it looks like the earth's magnetic field is weakening in prelude to a reversal of polarity.

Oh - it's going to take a thousand years? Whew! Thought I'd have to go reverse all my compass needles tomorrow or something...

The precise date of change to Magnetic Field Savings has yet to be determined. We'll try to give 30 years' notice.

To continue the thread that was erased yesterday due to a fiendish plot by the GPS Cartel, the decline in magnetic field strength can be attributed to the increased use of GPS receivers and decreased use of magnetic compasses. As the earth loses its magnetic field, the aurora borealis will no longer be confined to northern latitudes or high altitudes. There can be no doubt that when this happens, and the aurora reaches the ground, the intense radiation will cause brain tumors. People who have used cel phones will be particularly at risk. Our only defence against this radiation will be for everyone to put on aluminum foil radiation shields before going outside.

*sigh*

If only the United States had signed the Kyoto Accords, this might not be happening.
