Misplaced Priorities

Well, perhaps the post-Zinmeister Euro-bashing was a but much, but surely this is the sign of a civilization in decline:

Nearly 80 percent of British smokers, almost 70 percent in the Netherlands, France and Germany and more than 55 percent in the Belgium and Spain would forgo sex rather than live without cigarettes for a month.

That utility curve (Nicotine and carcinogens for sex) certainly explains the demographics.

I don't know. A month without sex is not so bad (unless you're also required to be the "master of your domain"). Everybody's been in that situation probably a number of times. But a month without nicotine? An hour is bad enough. I quit alcohol, caffiene, and other substances pretty much the moment I decided I didn't like their effects anymore. But the smoking habit took 14 years before I permanently got rid of it.

I suspect the French will find this shocking - that 20% of the Brits would actually have to forgo something, that is. 8-)
