Incidentally, if you live in a Republican senator's state, and you want Lott gone, take ten minutes and phone your senator to let him know. Don't email or fax -- call. It carries more weight.

A written letter carries even more weight. IIRC, the rule of thumb is that one letter equals 100 votes. (Unless it's obviously a form letter.)

It's not so much I want Lott gone. I'd like someone effective, even ruthless to replace him. But who? I can't think of a Senate Republican with any kind of an edge or any political smarts to speak of. Hope I'm wrong. Norm Coleman?

Come, come. You can't think of a SINGLE Republican? How about Bill Frist, Rick Santorum, John Kyl, George Allen, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Chuck Grassley or Dick Lugar? Frist would be my first choice, but if you dig into the public statements and voting records of any of these folks you'll find PLENTY of "edge." I think the only reason that Lott has stayed on top for six years can be traced to the amiability of the Senate. Sometimes, this gentlemanly behavior is becalming. Sometimes, as now, it's enough to make you tear your hair out by the roots.

Btw, just called Sen. Fitzgerald of Illinois. It felt very, very weird (I just can't imagine them caring about what some yahoo says over the phone) but I did my part.

Very glad to hear it. I feel like I'm doing my civic duty, even though we don't have the priceless boon of a Republican Senator to call here.

That sounds like a great suggestion, but do you do if you live in California? Hell, even my representative is a Democrat!

Damn them, damn them, damn them - these spineless fools. The Senate Republicans, and the Bush White House, have totally fucked themselves.

I totally agree with Andrew Sullivan's December 13 post on Lott, which is just a small sampling of the many, many similar posts in the conservative blogosphere.

Apparently, maintaining Trent Lott's smarmy, unctuous, blow-dryed, shuck & jive, bullshit, segregationist, mug in a "leadership" position is more important than the success of the whole rest of the Republican Party.

I finally have my answer: there is not one Republican Senator in the United States Congress with an ounce of vision or bravery. Spineless fools. Damn them. Damn them to the political oblivion to which they have doomed themselves. They deserve the years of race-baiting, divisive, class-warfare politics that will certainly, certainly ensue.

And for what? To keep Lott as Majority Leader? Daschle will play him like a cheap piano - like he always has. Fools.

Stupidity and cowardice are henceforth the sole requirements to be a Republican United States Senator.

I became anti-republican because of Nixon. I became anti-democrat because of Clinton. I've always found it easy to dislike scum.

Thank you demosthenes for reminding me why democrats are still worse today. At least republicans take out their trash (even if the elected ones never have the balls to be first). 99% of the right have blasted Lott (and Falwell, Buchanon, Robertson). The left continues to proudly, blindly enable Clinton, Jackson, Sharpton etc.

All the voices from the left are having fun blasting Lott, but they are merely joining all the voices of the right. Where were they when Byrd gagged on his foot? The left can never speak truth about their perverts as long as they are still covering for Clinton.

Oh oh, he's not over that yet, someone will say. Go ahead - ask me why I can't get over the left saying a president can break the law as long as he's a democrat. Why exactly am I supposed to get over that?

Lott will soon join the far right outlaws that have no power and influence except to be used as whipping boys for the left. The trash will be taken out. Civilized.
