Has anyone else noticed that Salon's content is getting extremely thin? I know it's the holiday, but I've been watching the decline for months. . . sections only have one column each, and anything you want to read is premium - and there's not even much in the latter category. Does this spell doom?
Posted by Jane Galt at January 4, 2003 09:55 AM | TrackBack | Technorati inbound linksI noticed the drop in content several weeks ago. The drop off started about the time they switched to offering premium and non premium content. I recently deleted the Salon bookmark.

I also know that as of a few months ago, at least, an editor I spoke to there indicated they were no longer paying for freelance work. I'd bet there are exceptions to that rule for writers with better reputations than I, but it does tell you something about how their budget problems are directly impacting the content they can put out.
Despite their issues, I still wish them the best of luck; they are a fairly unique outlet right now, and I'd prefer a world where they stick around. (And sure, one reason is I'd like to sell them another piece someday...)

Posted by: N.Z. Bear on January 4, 2003 12:05 PMIt's been slowing down for a long time. I used to be a Premium Subscriber, but I got sick of it. Seemed like all the interesting stories started disappearing, and we got more and more anti-Bush political articles. I think they are trying to mobilize their subsriber base or something, but it just started boring me. I like Salon because its fascinating articles (one I still remeber is about the theory that Marlowe actually wrote Shakespeares plays) and stuff like that, not lefty agitprop. Not to mention their entirely lame advice columinsts. They ought to get Dan Savage in there to liven the place up.
Anyway, yeah, they are screwed. Their stock is worthless now, and they are in the spiral of doom now. No money, no good content, no subscribers, less money, death. Its unfortunate.
Posted by: Toxic on January 4, 2003 01:40 PMI'm a stockholder, but I hadn't been paying close attention to the stock value over the holidays.
I just checked, and my Yahoo list shows a zero.
Doesn't sound good.
