In Brazil, this is what they think we are teaching in junior high?

We have a wonderful Brazilian exchange student/Au Pair living with us. She received this image of a supposed junior high text book page. It's circulating by email. Take a look at it - it says some really offensive things while talking about rainforest preservation. It also says them in less than perfect English so it's surely a hoax. It seems her friends all believe it is real. Have any of you seen it? Supposedly Introduction to Geography by David Norman. An excerpt:

..it (FINRAF)was part of eight countries which were, in the majority of cases, kingdoms of violence, drug trade, illiteracy and a unintelligent (sic)and primitive people....the possession of these valuable lands to such primitive cultures and peoples should condemn the lungs of the world to disappearance and full destroying (sic) in few years (sic again)
What evil moron created this? Please let me know if you have any input. Posted by Mindles H. Dreck at November 28, 2001 09:55 PM | Technorati inbound links

I received the same e-mail with this hoax a few days ago. A simple research in googles shows that is a stupid lie.
Ask your Au Pair to translate for you from Portuguese the following sites:
www.quatrocantos.com, which shows many hoaxes; http://www.quatrocantos.com/tec_web/lendas/12lendas_54.htm shows how we can tell this one is nonsense
and http://brasil.iwarp.com/, a posible responsible for this hoax.

I just received a mail with such a filthy attachment. I lived in Warren and Flint, Michigan as a GMOO student fighting for an MD at the GMI (today Kettering University). Over the years, mainly on duty, I visited many times the USA, where I brought an American citizen from: my eldest son.
Therefore, I got extremely upset and sick to my stomach with such a kind of document that many people, irresponsively spread around. I must agree with you because, as a registered auditor, I decided to audit the legitimacy of the subject paper. Thru Altavista, only four links appear to take you to FINRAF, that´s how I came across with your conscious statemet I fully endorse in agreement.
A clean environment also means a clean web!

I received the same email and I'm so surprised until now.I'm au pair in New York City from Brazil and I couldn't believe somebody wrote that!
That's why I found this web page. I just started to looking for some more informations about the author, the book, and this keyword: FINRAF.
I swear the people here isn't stupid enough to believe on it! I love my country and I think everybody should go there and enjoy a very nice views, warm people, life style and then make your own opinion about that beautiful country!!

I think it's a desinformartion tatic deliberately created and published by American Government agencies through the internet whose objective is aparently inofensive because it clearly appears to be a hoax. But if you think the author(s ?) are trying to test public opinion on such matters they are conducting successfully their work. Don't you agree?
This e-mail spreaded incredibly fast in Brazil. People are really angered with US and I am not surprised if such a game would not have an imediate effect on the next Brazil's president ellection.

Just an update, since it's been almost a year since I posted it.

It is obviously a hoax, and NO, I don't believe the U.S. government did it:

1) I don't believe they have the intent to do such a thing

2) If they did have the intent, they could do a much, much better job. This is written in horrible english.

The latter point also refutes the idea that some sort of "opinion-testing" is at work.

Just some random lunatic.

It's hard to believe that there's people which never heard about hoax pages. Some friends wrote to me in order to spam this joke. That's what it is! A joke like another which describes a Hospital where men can be pregnant! Just laugh my friends and let it go away just like other thousands of urban legends.

That was just a silly joke. According to our sources back in Brazil, that was created by some extremist Brazilian people. Some of the newspapers in Brazil reported this problem, and the Brazilian embassy in NY was cautious enough to check these facts with the American government.

That was definetely a (very) silly joke! Nowadays that's what the Internet is for!

If US wants the Amazonia, it has to take the whole thing. God bless America.

I am from Chile and always worried with this globalization that surrounds and opress us, as a kind of invisible and terrible snake (a bad snake, I don´t hate snakes). I have no doubt that northamerican people is, as all peoples of the world, composed by good and not so good people; and is clear to me and to many people, that northamericans governments had not shown in the recent and long past, much respect for poor countries. It seems to me that northamerican governments have seen us as unable of good decisions, unable of managing our business, as inferiors (and this is a kind of nazism of course)...and what is really behind all this kind of northamerican attacs, is their ambition, their necessity of money and of being the most powerfull country...I remembre the excellent film "Bowling for Columbine". A terrified people that seems not to be happy. I lived in Canada and visited often the States and, at least in the big cities I have the same impression. It is for all these reasons that, when I received this note of Mr David Norman, I begun to investigate, as you all. I have not certainty of anyything yet. I have no good proof for believing or not the note. In google, I do found a list of teachers in a school where Mr. Norman appears with an Introduction to Geography course.
However, most of the answers that I found in this page, makes me believe that, as I was telling, northamerican people has also good persons, as all peoples in the world (Only look to my own people: we have a Pinochet and we have a Neruda, just for giving an example)
I hope that we could be the mayority: the people who thinks that we must respect each others, no matter our diferences. Good luck for every body. Verónica.
