I have received several notes complaining of this site's appearance in IE6. The thing that's bothering me is that I use IE6 and it looks fine. I am assured by Charles that I am covered for the Mac version. I run Windows 2000. Could there be a difference if the user is running XP or ME? I think it's reasonable to question the Microsoft folks QA if that's the case.

Opposition to this war has come on several fronts, but one of the persistent arguments is that we have not significantly improved our security through military action.
This is an argument seems to be the new line for opponents of the war that is really out there. The argument seems to be that if you do not reduce the risk of future attacks to zero that you haven't really accomplished anything. These folks might as well argue that it is pointless to arrest people and try them for murder because this doesn't do anything to diminish the capacity of those not in custody to committ murder.
Even if we stopped everything right now, clearly the U.S. has severely diminished the capability of Al Qaeda to plan and carry out attacks. The importance of having a free reign in Afghanistan to set up training camps, etc. seems to be seriously underestimated by critics of the war effort.

2. This comment may seem a non sequitor against the previous comment but either Brian commented against the wrong post or I did or the site's discussion system is screwed up.
Posted by: David Bakin on January 18, 2002 11:03 AMWhen I made that post I saw only one "Comments" line, which was after the Browser Incompatibilities story. Now I see one under the other story as well. Not sure if it was really not there or if i just overlooked it scanning down the page.
Posted by: Brian Carnell on January 18, 2002 11:30 AMBecause my eyes ain't so good, I use the view/font size function of IE6 (Win2K). If I set it too large, it blows everything. That's because you set font sizes in your html, 'Mindles'. I have to activate the "ignore font sizes" feature to make the "change font size" work. As an old html designer from the standards wars of 94-95, I hate the style sheets that set font sizes. The whole point of html in the beginning was for it to be platform independent. Now everybody tries to control every aspect of their page appearance, and in so doing, they break half the browsers trying to view them.
Posted by: Bill Quick on January 18, 2002 01:09 PMI think that the confusion may come from the platform. It also looks fine for me with IE6 on XP on my laptop -- but only if the window is wide enough. But that's true also for IE 5.5 on Win2K.
Because of how you've designed the layout and the placement of the right sidebar, when the window is narrow the bars collide and even overlap. But that has nothing to do with IE6 or XP. I suspect that your correspondent who complained was using a laptop with a low-res screen.

Posted by: mccaff on January 19, 2002 11:31 PMOriginal problem ws on ie 6 on w98 with 1280x1040 resolution, so I have lots of space (i.e. its not a low res laptop, as per one of the above comments).. but it cleared itself up on friday??? no explanation there...
I have run into the problem on a machine with a smaller screen, but as was explained earlier thats due to css implementation..
good luck with the fixes
