silhouette3.JPG From the desk of Jane Galt:

Why was the site down, Mommy?

Those of you who noticed that the site went down last night, let me explain: I am an idiot.

I wasn't checking my hotmail account, and thus did not notice the past due notice from Cornerhost. This caused Cornerhost to shut me off. The situation has been rectified thanks to the timely intervention of my co-blogger, whom I owe a drink when I return from London, where I am presently ensconced.

Blogging has been light on my side (although my co-blogger, thankfully, is making up for it) because the only place I can blog is from work, which is where I shouldn't be blogging. However, look for some exciting entries this weekend on hot topics like corporations and transaction costs, poverty remediation and inequality, and English hotels.

And I just thought you didn't love us any more!

I suspect English hotels is one of those subjects that everyone will agree upon. Unless they are unbelievably expensive, they mostly suck (and are just terribly expensive).

No place to blog? Surely you jest? Just head over to your friendly EasyInternet after work and blog away! It's only a couple of bucks an hour.

So no more excuses, OK?

What is this "after work" you speak of?

Welcome to london JG - given where you're probably working, may I recommend "La Grande Marque" on Ludgate Hill (By St Pauls) to drink in, and walking along the Embankment from a station too early if you're heading somewhere ont he circle line...

"...and walking along the Embankment from a station too early if you're heading somewhere ont he circle line..."

Walking? In London??? The city that's more dangerous than New York?

Ms. McArdle is probably too smart to do that.

Huh? I walk around in London at night all the time. I pretty much stick to public places, of course, but I've never even seen a problem, let alone had one of my own.

Of course, I walk around New York too. The danger of big cities has always seemed overrated to me, as long as you apply minimal common sense.

Then again, perhaps I'd feel differently if I ever got assaulted....

Or if you were a woman, Kevin, although I have to admit I've never personally felt threatened traveling alone in London or New York. But then, like you, I stick to safe areas. I have been in areas of Paris I would rather have avoided, and I think I would have felt safer if I were a man.

I do hope this "work" is legitimate employment, and not a subversive mission to track down and "adjust" d-squared.

Oops, violence as humor. Guess that makes me a conservative?

London? Admit it, Ms. Galt...you're a secret agent for an un-named government agency.

Mild-mannered blogger by day...femme fatale at night. Fighting the forces of S.C.A.B. (Secret Cabal of Anti-American Bastards).

Armed only with a pair of stilletos and her razor-sharp intellect, Agent G fights a never ending battle for truth, justice and the American Way.

Thank God you're on our side.

The Embankment runs along the Thames - we're talking areas (anywhere JG would be, for most hours of commuting or the working day) that 90% of the people on are tourists, lawyers, accountants or bankers. The City. The alternatives largely being students on the way to the LSE.

You're safe pretty much anywhere north of the river between Covent Garden and St Pauls, in for say two thirds a mile, during day time. At night, most of the middle's empty, so you're probably safe but wouldn't be there. Further West, it's the West End, where there are immense numbers of people, and the risk is pick-pockets (unless you're trying to get an unlicensed cab). East, there's nothing you'd go to. South, depends where you cross, as there's housing, various types of neighbourhoods, etc, pretty quickly.
