silhouette3.JPG From the desk of Jane Galt:

Our long national nightmare is over

As many of you know, my apartment search has been difficult. Sisyphean, even. I have found -- and lost -- five or six suitable apartments over the past eight months.

Many of you were deceived by my post indicating that I was moving to Brooklyn. I was moving to Brooklyn, until the fellow I was supposed to move in with asked for a cashier's check for several thousand dollars, with the lease to appear at some time in the indefinite future.

Then I was supposed to move into a rent stabilized apartment. Landlord backed out at the last minute.

Then there was the roommate . . . well, I won't bore you.

The point is, I've finally found an apartment.

Like all New York apartments, I can't afford it, it's small, it's oddly shaped, and it has too little closet space. However, it does have a decent kitchen, hardwood floors, a more than adequate amount of light, and it's on the first floor, so the dog can enjoy barking at passing strangers. Plus, it's three blocks from my parents' house -- and yes, that's a feature, not a bug. My parents aren't the snoopy, overbearing kind that stop by to check on your laundry technique. They're the nice kind that bring you things when you're sick.

I love it.

I signed a lease on Saturday, and I move in this week. I haven't had any pledge drives this year, so this is it -- if you want to hit the tip jar to help cover the staggering broker's fee I just paid, or the myriad costs of moving, I'd greatly appreciate it.

But most importantly, I wanted to share my joy with my readers. After 2 1/2 years of living with my parents, I finally have a home.

Congratulations!

I recently lived through a similar brand of purgatory. After a year of tuffing it out with family I now have a cool, if not small, house that is all mine and is really - perfect.

Best of luck and oh yeah... love your stuff!

Wow, Congrats!

...One of the features is that with only three blocks to cover, you can realistically hope to leave the less frequently needed stuff over at the folks', until the need to retrieve it actually arises, thus saving you A LOT of moving hassle.

Envy.

...And congratulations.

Didn't know about the place in Brooklyn had fallen through or I would have let you know about the 2 bedroom available in my building for the price of a one bedroom. Pets allowed. If you know anyone who is looking...

PS when's the house-warming party?

Congratulations! I guess your pessimism was misplaced.

They're the nice kind that bring you things when you're sick.

I'm feeling a bit under the weather. Any chance I can get some chicken soup?

Congrats on finding an apartment.

Congrats on finding a place, Megan. The real question, of course, is whether it's within walking distance of your office, so you can get home in the next blackout. And ground floor, too, very wise...

Will there be macaroni and cheese at the housewarming?

And here I was thinking that you were moving to Hoboken...

Quote from a comment on the Mac-N-Cheese Entry:
"TO ALL THE MEN IN THE NEW YORK AREA

Let's review: Megan is witty, well educated, good looking (by all reports), and now we learn that she can cook and that she plays poker. Why is this woman still single?"

Perhaps they were all waiting for her to get her own place? What's wrong with all you guys?!?

Come move to Austin. The city's single population is 57% male. Clearly not so good for me of course... =(

You New Yorkers would save yourselves a lot of expense and aggravation if you would just live in NJ and take the train in every day. My brother lives in Red Bank and doesn't seem to mind. You could probably fit six of your apartments into his house.

Indeed, I was considering Hoboken and Jersey City. In my case, the prime consideration is that a) I don't have a car and b) I do have a dog and c) at least one day a week I have extra long hours at the office. These factors made a long commute prohibitive because of dog-walking expenses. With my parents right there, on the other hand, I can save $100 a month by leaving the dog with them on my long days. So it was a fiscally responsible decision, though I am second to none in my admiration of the delights of New Jersey.
