Canada refuses asylum to a Mexican gay man because he's too macho.

What about heterosexual males who aren't macho enough? Or, for that matter, heterosexual females who look too macho? Can they get asylum in Canada?
I wonder what the long term effects of this sort of immigration selection bias would be on Canada's demographics.
Posted by: qetzal on May 4, 2004 06:16 PMOne has to look like a victim? Only in a country like Canada can such lunacy be considered normal. What are they drinking besides Molsen?

Posted by: Richard Cook on May 5, 2004 09:34 AMWhat if you are a male interior decorator? Seems you would qualify for asylum by default...

Can you mince for me a moment, dahling?
Posted by: Mark on May 5, 2004 04:35 PMActually, it's not as quite as bad as the soundbite makes it seem. I mostly agree with this editorial.
This guy was asking for fast-track refugee status based on fear of persecution. Mexico is not a particularly bad place for its treatment of gay people. Moving to Mexico City would get him pretty much the same improvement in his treatment as emigrating to Canada. (That said, I'm for open immigration, so I don't think he, or anyone else, should have to take the refugee status route in the first place.)
