If this is true, it's absolutely fantastic news: Zarqawi reported captured on Syrian border.

Posted by: Kate on July 30, 2004 03:12 PMDarn those Iraqis! Didn't they get the memo? This was supposed to be announced during, not after, the Democrat convention! Can't they do anything right?
Posted by: David Walser on July 30, 2004 03:14 PMAny or all captures will have little or no effect on the election.
Posted by: judson on July 30, 2004 03:23 PMWell, the correct link would help.
The 48 hour rule is in effect. Except I think we should make it a 96 hour rule.
And let me be the first to say, "THE TIMING IS VERY SUSPICIOUS!"
(Yeah, David Walser implied it, but I was the first to say it.)

I always thought it was the 72-hour rule myself. The timing of the matter is frankly irrelevant although it probably won’t stop the moon bat crowd from concocting all of sorts of conspiracy theories. I just hope that they don’t find out we really had Bin Laden on ice for about the last eighteen months and we’re planning on revealing it the Friday before the election. ;)
Certainly, newsworthy things in Iraq/Iran/Saudi Arabia should be judiciously time-released in a well lubricated easy to swallow capsule. It is in the public's interest, no?
Posted by: twerp on July 30, 2004 05:44 PMCBC News cites conflicting reports-
BAGHDAD - There are conflicting reports that one of Washington's most wanted men has been captured in Iraq.
Al-Arabiya television reported Monday that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is in custody, but the head of the U.S. military in Iraq denied the reports.

Note that the CBC news report is from June 28, so it would seem unlikely that it is commenting on the Al Bawaba report of July 30. More likely is that this rumor has popped up before, much like the frequent captures of Bin Ladin.
Of course, every time I hear the rumors, I still hope that they're true.
Posted by: Dan on July 31, 2004 09:30 AMThis is a recycling of a story that actually roiled the currecny markets on Thursday, but was denied.
Interestingly, the denial seems to be anonymous, and very weak. so we are keeping hope alive.
The Command Post had yesterday's version (all detals match - Syrian border, joint US/Iraqi arrest, clothing).

Wait. Yes I did...

Posted by: Sharp as a Marble on August 2, 2004 04:45 PMCode Orange based off mostly 3 and 4 year old intell is shameless rumor mongering. So was the Qadaffi disavowing terrorism, as hes now implicated in plotting the assassination of the Saudi crown prince. Berger has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing at the Archives, so theres another rumor squashed.
Posted by: Begbee on August 2, 2004 10:15 PMGeez, this post seems to be a magnet for off topic responses.
Now, if only I could get a line on some bamboo....
Posted by: Tomorrowist on August 2, 2004 11:02 PMWe probably won't hear anything more about this until US soldiers march him onto the podium in chains at the republican convention. (jk)
