Holy Smokes!

I just watched Jim McGreevey's resignation speech. That was the most unexpected thing I've seen since my two-headed uncle debated free silver and triumphantly refuted himself.

I don't have any useful commentary or anything. But I can't resist pointing out that IIRC, his campaign slogan was "Straight talk".

You recalled correctly. In addition, in 2002 at least one NJ columnist made a pointed rejoinder about McGreevey's use of the phrase, leaving little doubt about the double meanings involved:

With all the trouble his chief supporters had gotten into of late, it was only a matter of time before he was investigated and there would have been some sort of money-related scandal.

The homosexuality admission will obscure all of that and will lead to a long and prosperous career giving speeches to gay-friendly groups.

There isnt much money in being a disgraced NJ governor. A gay NJ governor pays better.

Times sure have changed - to salvage what is left of his reputation, and deflect attention from corruption charges, a governor...comes out of the closet!

Even ten years ago, that would have been unthinkable.

Gee--a crook who was willing to betray his state and his country to put an utterly unqualified himbo into a position that would impact the safety of the citizens he was sworn to defend gets up and says "I'm gay, I'm proud, and I'm quitting just as soon as I'm sure that a Democrat will replace me." Boo-fricking-hoo. The scumbag should be facing a treason prosecution, not receiving gushing praise from people impressed with his public speaking skills--and if his wife stuck a shiv in him for humiliating her before the nation, I'd bet that there wouldn't be a jury in the state that would convict her for it.

Actually, after Monica became a nuisance around the White House, she was sent to work in the Pentagon. Yes, really.


As far as McGreedy is concerned, Hallex has it right. There are more bribery-and-corruption scandals swirling around NJ than hurricane winds around Florida.
