I just bought a Roomba this very week... Now I want one that mops, and I sure hope they'll give me a good trade-in on this Roomba when the next-generation one empties its own little dustbin. (It's just a kick in the pants to watch, which I know defeats the purpose of having a carpet sweeper [take note, NOT a vacuum in any real sense] that can work while you're not watching.)

Where would we be without the UN to figure this stuff out for us?

I would rather have Rodney Brooks, our Australian Lisp hacker build our robots than the Japanese. The Japanese robots look like something out of a B-movie. (I thought that CNN only had Luddites, not people who might like robots). After all, the Unibomber-style leftist isn't exactly pro-technology: just ask David Gelernter.

I bought my mom a roomba, and she flipped out. She loves it. Yeah, the robots may take over, and the singularity or judgement day or whatever may be around the corner.

But it beats working in the sugar mines any day.

The Roomba is great, but robot lawn mowers are the ultimate power in the universe.

The real question is: can these robots be taught to play baseball?

I wouldn't mind one of those robot lawn mowers, but with kids and toys and crap, I'm afraid of what a robot floor cleaner would pick up.

Oh, and when I saw that the UN reported this, I wondered who would benefit from the report. The robot overlords are no doubt bribing the UN...

Oh, right like my dog is going to let me get the combination of two things that scare her to death; Vacuum cleaners and inanimate objects that move! Dog people of the world unite! This is some sort of cat-lover conspiracy. Always knew the cats were somehow the power behind the UN throne....

Nah, it's definitely not a cat conspiracy. It took ours over a year to accept that a battery-powered hand vac wasn't a cleverly-disguised Illudium PU-39 Explosive Space Modulator. The standard vaccuum cleaner sent her to a much higher elevation or another room, whichever was more convenient, for something like five years.

Were she not now rather old and having attained unto the sort of "cat zen" that permits 3-4 hour stretches of uninterrupted deep sleep, the arrival of a robotic cleaning implement would probably receive the same welcome as a litter of puppies.
