I hadn't thought of it that way before; and the more I chew on it, the better a metaphor it seems. If you haven't had a service contract on your car from the time you bought it, then you have to submit the car to an inspection before you get a contract quote. And if your transmission has been leaking fluid for a few months, don't count on getting a contract.
Sure, employer-paid premiums and risk pools of large numbers of employees will help cover those certainties he talks about. But there are limits to coverage, just as if you were leaking transmission fluid.
I was made a bit queasy by his site's color choice, though.
