First Toys 'R Us talks about getting rid of its toy business, and now IBM is selling off it's PC division. Next: Microsoft auctions off its operating system business in order to focus on making game consoles.

Posted by: James Joyner on December 3, 2004 11:42 AMLatest business news: General Motors is considering getting out of automobile manufacturing.
3M will quit making tape
And Disney will quit manufacturing scarcity and focus on making movies. (Personal gripe there; my 3-year-old nephew loves Toy Story, but it's not out now and won't be again until he's my 8-year-old nephew; thank goodness for used DVD stores, where I was able to find TS2.)
Posted by: denise on December 3, 2004 12:11 PMJames: Walmart. They were getting killed by them in the Toy business. They are switching to BabiesRUs now. Expect this to last a year or two before this gets hammered by Walmart. Just an attempt to survive.

Since the copyright industries have declared war on fair use and the concept of public domain, we've got no choice but to declare war right back.
Here's a Bittorrent of Toy Story 1 in DivX format. http://tinyurl.com/4685n
You could also rent Toy Story and rip it to DVD with DVDShrink for free.
Or you could spend $50(!) for a used DVD on half.com.
Posted by: nathan b on December 3, 2004 02:41 PMSo after Babies R Us, what then? They're at the end of that road, and they'll have to jump into something completely unrelated, and come up with a whole new name. Or just liquidate the whole thing and retire.
Posted by: Ken on December 3, 2004 03:45 PMHow about Berkshire Hathaway stops making shirts to become some kind of insurance company?
Posted by: Jim Glass on December 3, 2004 10:38 PMOne can only hope that Microsoft sells windows to someone like Kmart so it can get even more screwed up then it presently is.
Posted by: SteveoBrien on December 5, 2004 07:48 AMPaul: Ha!
Notice it's a Chinese company doing the buying? I saw they bought an old iron-ore company, Cleveland Cliffs, early in the big price runup.
There's more money over here than a lot of people suspect (and more capitalism, though it's an odd variety, flavored with state control and corruption).
