silhouette3.JPG From the desk of Jane Galt:

Holy love nest, batman!

Seems we've found the real reason for Bernard Kerik's abrupt departure: the love nest, facing the ground zero pit, where he had an extramarital affair with the women who published his autobiography.

I am waiting patiently for the Democrats who have been crowing over his departure to rise up in indignation at the Republicans senselessly persecuting this man over a harmless extramarital affair.

Update Tee-hee! Every Democrat in the blogosphere seems to be linking to this post, working themselves up into a foaming lather of righteous indignation. Y'all, it was a throwaway line; there's something wrong if it's generating this much emotional energy. Why so defensive? Doth the lady protest to much?

We Dems will say something in his defense when Republicans acknowledge that nominating and championing a lying, corrupt, abusive, thoroughly dishonest, political hack with mob ties to safeguard our nation's border reflects poorly on how seriously the Republicans take the issue of homeland security.

And fifty lashes to the first Republican who whines about Clinton.

No, we're not going to cry that he's being persecuted.

The fact that he is a serial adulterer, pervert, and got his jollies while overlooking sacred ground is no defense to his likely criminal activities.

Posted by: Geek, Esq. on December 15, 2004 03:51 PM

ooooh, lashes...me first, me first.

Oh c'mon. The fact that they didn't vet the nomination should say more considering the laundry list of "lyes" and abuses of power coming out now.
Abuse of police power, accusations of abuse of power in Iraq, possible mob ties, and...and questionable temperament for homeland security. Dear god, an illegal alien nanny? Is this the kind of man we want overlooking homeland security?
Okay, that last one was kind of silly, but you get the point.
Let's not make this about Clinton because it's not similar at all.

Posted by: megapotamus on December 15, 2004 05:12 PM

Yeah, the mob ties, lack of qualifications (just got finished college - congrats, Bernie!), shitty job in Iraq, etc. aside, the sex should have nothing to do with it. That's between him and his wives.

I mean "wife."

Posted by: Quisp on December 15, 2004 05:21 PM

Sheesh...this was just pathetic. Are you really so deluded that you cannot think of any other reason why Bernie's name should never have been submitted in the first place?

If it were really about the sex, I'd defend Bernie to the hilt, since an extra-marital affair has nothing to do with his abilities or his qualifications. Since there were, at last count, something like a dozen damn good reasons to disqualify Bernie, the sex just doesn't enter into it.

Oh, and by the way, Jane, did you happen to notice how Bernie actually got that little love nest of his?

Posted by: PaulB on December 15, 2004 05:25 PM

Republicans are by nature unable to comprehend that it's about the corruption, mob ties, and incompetence rather than the sex, because of the four, sex is the only one that offends them.

Posted by: Laertes on December 15, 2004 05:33 PM

Wait no longer, Jane. You'll find thorough agreement from all over the Democratic blogosphere.

The affair is unconscionable, base, and vile, but is ultimately not really the public's business and should be given only a cursory treatment in the press at best.

The fact that the republicans care more about his bedroom antics than his other crimes against state and morality, like misappropriating real estate allocated for 9/11 rescue workers, a lifetime of corrupt politics, and his atrocious performance in Iraq with its consequent cost in American and Iraqi lives, shows just how sad their true motivations are. (An example: Keric spent $1.2 billion to train soldiers in Jordan despite offers from Europe to pay for the training. Nothing like funneling taxpayer money to your favorite cronies.)

They would have put this creep in charge of our nation's security, if it weren't that he slept around on his wife. Bad policy and corruption mean nothing to them: only the scarlet letter is enough to remove a man from office. The GOP's mindset is so thorougly obsessed with sex these days it scares me.

Pathetic.

I'm not a democrat, but I think this is pretty disingenious of Jane. I'll say right out front, that I think the sex is the least of this scumball's offenses. Happy Jane?

But, boy is the Schadenfreude delicious when you realize his ground-zero love-monkey was so publicly sanctimonious about Monicagate and did a lot of public sighing and moaning about how immoral adultery and Clinton is (atrios has a nice summary) my favorite being:

"Let me tell you something, my father has never cheated on my mother, my brothers have never treated cheated on their wives."

Now she can add

"I, on the other hand, used to screw a married man at the edge of a mass grave of the worst terror attack in US history."

Paybacks (and karma) are absolute hell.

It's not the sex, it's the hypocrisy.

I'll give it to you Jane- and Neil. The sex is his and his wife's business- not me, don't care.
And doing it in an apartment donated to the city is more disgusting than the oval office???? To whom???

Corruption, greed- allegations about that dogged the Clinton's too. Never saw it proved there and never saw it proved here.

Now ineptness in his previous government appointed position...that gives me pause. At least Clinton had proven himself as a successful governor before he was nominated for his position.

Clinton wasn't named by the president to a cabinet position. Clinton was running for office, and he won. Twice. He was impeached for behavior far more trivial than the things Kerik is accused of.

Posted by: Wally on December 15, 2004 06:01 PM

Jane,

I appreciate the jab at Democrats who don't defend Kerik for his extramarital affair. However, no one should step up to defend BK given his siccing homicide detectives to harass TV producers after his girlfriend lost her cellphone. That's not about sex; it ventures into that flip side of the Clinton years -- abuse of power.

And I can't wait until people stop using "the democrats this" or "the republicans that" in asinine ways.

1. They're aggregates. Implicit to any talk or insinuation about aggregates as a whole commits the informal logical fallacy of converse accident.
2. lol A=A lol
3. What is publically perceived is what comes through the media. The national media covers a marginal amount of stories. Your exposure to this marginal array of stories is in turn marginal (unless you never leave the couch and are always watching CNN). If any of The Democrats start making these noises, you'd never know it. Probably for good reason -- there's no way for you to know it.

Uh, most people, probably. The oval office is the house of the person elected to live there, and they do lots of things there you wouldn't do in most government buildings, including have sex with their wives. This was an apartment donated to the city so that ground zero rescue workers could get some rest. If you've ever been to the Little Church That Stood across the street (St. Paul's) and talked to the people who succored rescue workers there you'll know that many people consider those places secondary sacred ground.

Matthew Yglesias said it best though he doesn't seem to have left a trackback. This isn't about the sex, it's about the cheating of the city.

I must have missed something. Which Republicans are "persecuting" Mr. Kerik for his affairs?

Posted by: kc on December 16, 2004 08:24 AM

The fact that conservatives still consider the Sudan Missile Attacks as a "Wag the Dog" abuse of power shows their willful blindness. THE TARGET OF THE SUDAN ATTACK WAS OSAMA BIN LADEN. The fact is that the Republicans were focused more on Clinton's dick than OBL's tail at the time. In my book, that is a text book case of "asleep at the wheel" negligence.

People, get your heads out of your asses. You wanted President Clinton to fail, recall. The consequence of your bitterness has now been visited on the heads of the 9-11 and Gulf War II widows. Never wish for a president to fail; we get stuck in messes like we are now.

Saheli, as it happens, I worked at Ground Zero for a year. St Paul's is sacred ground because it's . . . er . . . sacred ground. Y'know, consecrated to God. On the other hand, very few people consider the chinese restaurant where the Red Cross set up to be sacred ground, or any of the host of other auxiliary places where people from the site slept, ate, or [cough] whatever.

Posted by: Brittain33 on December 16, 2004 09:53 AM

Oy vey, people. Get a grip. Or at least get all the facts. The best way to do that is to go to the source: Bernard Kerik explains exactly what happened.

Posted by: Johnson on December 16, 2004 09:56 AM

The Kerik/Regan affair is not analogous to the Clinton/Lewninski affair. In the latter, an aggressive flirt, after a great deal of trying, managed to get to third base with Clinton. In the former, Regan and Kerik, like much of the 90s Republican leadership and their mistresses, were hitting home runs on a regular basis. If Regan, like Lewinsky, had been into saving souvenirs of semen/love, she wouldn't have a stained dress in her closet, but a pillowcase stuffed with all the panties she wore back to her office. But then, when you're getting it on a regular basis rather than in an unwilled and unrepeated instance, souvenirs probably don't mean nearly so much.

The Republicans should just be thankful that they now have another incompetent that can be the proud receipient of the Medal of Freedom next year. (If it turns out Kerik is actually corrupt; does that make him more qualified for the Medal?) They also have a very strong contender for the "unwarranted pardon" award at the end of Dubya's second term.

Be cheerful, be optimistic, it is the Christmas season. Look forward to what the next four years will bring.

Hoo Yah!

I think it's fair to ask Dems to insist Bernie's affair is private. Just as soon as you hear Rebublicans condemning it.

(By the way, yes, I think his affairs are private, although having an affair with a FoxNews family values talking head is funny as hell and she deserves to get laughed at. And doing it in an apartment donated for firefighters at Ground Zero is pretty scummy on both their accounts, no?)

Posted by: Polonius on December 16, 2004 10:45 AM

What IS it about Clinton? I hardly ever think of the guy anymore, but he's apparently the cause of all of W's problems. Despite the fact he's had a completely compliant Congress for the last two years and a largely compliant Congress for two years before that.
Actually, Kerik's sins are kinda laughable. He didn't bail because of Dem pressure, that's for sure. The Senate Dems were completely ready to roll over for him. It was that his own party was going to disown him that caused him to bail.
I think Kerik's trying to generate an aura of mendacious incompetence so he can get that Medal of Freedom.

Posted by: geeno on December 16, 2004 11:03 AM

boy, this brings me back. you know, I still do want to see Clinton slung from a tree. not literally, just, I want a general consensus the guy was bad news, bad president, et cetera. oh well, idle wants are idle wants. a hundred years from now most everything Clinton did will be erased and the standout accomplishment will be first sex-scandal in the white house. I don't quite get why even liberals want that for an emblem except for the naive hope that whatever liberal things he did are around to stay. agreed Bush is deep red Republican; he got a majority of the popular vote. even slightly less deep red next time, equally cool guy, and it's a reliable win in 2008... and so on... gay marriage issue on the ballots each time and it's set.

can't really care about kerik though. his cabinet nomination never went anywhere, offence was caught early, didn't happen while he was in office, etc... lots of guys beat their wives or cheat on them or whatever, try getting indignant each and every time... sometimes it's just weariness on our part. can't call out everyone or our voice'd get raspy; doesn't mean we don't care. heck, I'm only bothering to capitalize names, it's weariness.

we caught him, so he ain't getting nominated, problem nipped in the bud, next? Clinton was different... he'd already made it to office by the time Lewinsky entered into the picture. too late, and that time around, the solution is successful impeachment instead of not-nominating.

he's not the president, he's not working for the president anymore now that this has been found out, and he's isn't me or someone I know, so it's pretty hard to devote all my energy to it. meh, whatever, he's a jerk, movin' on with life...

Posted by: jarenco on December 16, 2004 11:33 AM

I'm a liberal who laughed out loud at the throwaway line. I think I get it:

Republicans call themselves the values party, I think. Certainly they trump moral values.

Why on Earth would any Democrat step in if the Republicans insist on criticizing one of their own? Analogously, if you're a member of a club with strict behavior rules, I'll be upset if you shriek about a non-club-member violating those rules, but if you want to shriek amongst yourselves... why would I care? Republican loyalist Kerik has signed himself up for Club GOP, and if he doesn't follow their rules, let them whack him with a slapstick. It's their club, and when it's in-club folly, ain't my place to impose my rules.

After all, that would be the *Democrats* dictating to the *Republicans* how *they* should think and behave...

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh. Teehee :)

(When clubs start creating legislative policy, then they're automatically imposing the policy rules on everyone. But this isn't legislative proceedings, it's a nomination to the Republican President 2004 Club.)

Posted by: Geo on December 16, 2004 11:43 AM

Hello???? Incoming clue!!!

I don't give a damn if Kerik had an affair with a syphilitic goat on the grave of Ronald Reagan.

I am concerned that it is clear that he is mobbed up.

He was broke, then he bought two apartments, did business with mobbed up businesses, etc.

The problem is not his personal foibles, though his retaliation against someone who wrote up his other mistress is a cause for concern, but the fact that he was on the take.
