Visiting big cities in late December/early January to attend an "intimate" conference of a few thousand isn't as much fun as I once thought it would be. Besides, those that go often get roped into interviewing job candidates - 8 hours in a room saying the same thing over and over ("let me tell you about our department...") - it's just not worth it!
