Jane - Good to see you back to multiple posts and recipes! Your plans for your weekend sound ideal, btw. Anyhow, as to the topic of the post, yes, "House" is great, and it is a shame there's no way to get it to easily. (I'd record for you, but I have had a VCR for years.) I will say that the last couple episodes, which in addition to a medical mystery involve the new chairman trying to clean House, feel too contrived and like too many other dramas. Also, it looks like there may a romance (or unrequited love) blooming. Ugh. I sure hope we won't look back on this week at episode when House jumped the shark.

I tried "House" a couple of times and didn't think it was that great. The lack of realism -- why do House's cohort of jr MDs perform surgical procedures, why are all the operation rooms fitted with glass panels -- really, really undermines the show and the plot lines are only medium interesting.

We recently discovered House and have added it to our Tivo season pass list.

It's clearly not realistic, but I like it for the same reasons Megan does.

However, like MB, I am disappointed by the false dramatic tension and the story arc brought about by the new Chi McBride character (although I have loved Chi McBride since The John Laroquette Show).

One doctor told me that he liked House because he says things to patients that doctors would never say . . . but want to.

As a long time adoring fan of Hugh Laurie, it's great to see that he's finally getting some recognition in the US, and at least slightly amusing that it's not in a comedic role.

Jane, I'm sure you could Bittorrent House. If a show isn't available through normal channels, it's fair game to use "alternative" channels.

I'd think that you'd be able to get House in Britain if you looked hard enough, especially since he's British.

I was watching MI-5 (known as Spooks in the UK...a fantastic crime drama, not that you have to be that good to be better than CSI:Raleigh-Durham or whatever passes for crime drama over here), and spotted him (Laurie) in an early episode playing an MI-6 liason.

It's hard to mention Hugh Laurie without also bringing up Stephen Fry.

Which leads me to the question. Did anyone else know that "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" movie is being released in April? Stephen Fry plays the part of the book.

I can almost buy Sam Rockwell as Zephod Beeblebrox, but Mos Def as Ford Prefect?

I interviewed Hugh Laurie (and Stephen Fry) years ago during their P. G. Wodehouse TV double act. In addition to being charming - which I vaguely expected - Hugh Laurie in the flesh was something I hadn't remotely anticipated; very, very peel-your-socks-off-sexy in an oddly macho - not a quivery English - sort of way. Glad to see whoever cast House also gets this.

Hugh Laurie is wonderful, and wonderfully written, as Dr. House. Imagine an un-p.c. Hawkeye Pierce.

But they are now trying to make him lovable by introducing an "enemy." Chi McBride plays the anal retentive head of the hospital who wants to fire House. See, House won't wear a white coat. House doesn't make profits. Last Tuesday McBride got to metaphorically twirl his evil-man mustache and make a long speech ending, "This is nothing but a business."

What a breath of stale air.

Forgot to mention something else House has going for it: Brian Singer.

Agree fully. It is a great show, and I too was very surprised when I found out it was popular. I believe I saw an ad for it during the super bowl that said it had 40 million viewers?!? And now with an American Idol lead in I am sure it is doing very well.

I also agree that Hugh Laurie's character carries the show. (I personally like the smart-ass remarks more than the misanthropy - but it is even better in combination).

The patient might have one of those what-is-its. Those cardiac thingummies. Jeeves would know.

Armchair, I read somewhere that the show's ratings *doubled* when Idol's season started up as its lead-in. I don't know whether to cheer or bemoan.
