silhouette3.JPG From the desk of Contributor A:

Hi there

I'm very flattered to have been asked to fill in for Jane a bit this coming week as she takes a well-earned vacation. This is my first time doing regular blogging. Hello. How are you?

I am not Jane, of course. I have seen guest-bloggers filling in for vacationing bloggers who have infuriated readers. "Please come back!", they appeal to the regular blogger in the comments. "Your replacement is a moron and his politics are loathesome, and I bet he smells like sweaty socks!" I hope not to be terrible. I do.

My politics and specialties are a bit different from hers, which is why Jane--who is also my cubicle-mate--and I have been known to drive coworkers out of the room with one of our multi-hour debates, shaking their heads and muttering darkly. There will be no recipes from me, unless you are interested in one of my many exciting variations on Kraft mac and cheese.* Maybe a bit of my thoughts on US foreign policy, language, and journalism. Let's see how it goes.

* (A can of those spicy tomatoes and green chilies can make a tuna-mac say "Arriba!" Make the mac. Add tuna, and then the tomatoes and chilies. You might have to heat it back up in the microwave after adding the cold ingredients. Garnish with nothing.)

I like that one. Might try it with my home-grown tomatoes and chilies. Though I might overdo the chilis. Some like it HOT...

(I'm not much of a cook either - variations on Kraft mac and cheese are good enough for me.)

You don't have to be a cook to stir the pot, as it were; it should be an interesting week around here ;-)

I would stongly suggest taking up cooking, though. It can require months to get a proper feel and there will be some duds (even embarrasing ones) along the way, but it turned out to be one of the hobbies I can actually stay with long-term -- in part because I have motivation to persevere arriving roughly three times daily.

Cook to stir the pot! Ho Ho Ho.

Hey A. Aren't twenty-fours on a truck mean? I mean, they're spectacular! Real nasty! They spin when you stop! They do that.

Dear A,

One of the ongoing questions in the blogworld is, when a primary blogger goes on vacation, is the substitute really another person, or just the original blogger snaeaking back under another name.

I think your mac and cheese recipe nips that thought in the bud. I was particularly struck by the failure to mention an appropriate tool for making mac and cheese, available for only $27.95 from Amazon (or $2 at a discount kitchen store).

Your recipe is practically an anti-... wait, how smart is Jane?

I don't think Contributor A is Jane's alter ego. We all know Jane's alter ego is Mindles Dreck or Megan or some such. No, Contributor A must be someone else, and the obvious answer is: Karl Rove! Proof? There is none -- which is all the proof anyone should need! Besides, if you take out your decoder ring and rearrange the letters in Contributor A's post you get:

"Joe Wilson is a big weenie and his wife is a spy!..."

Your tuna/tomato/chile version sounds good, but I prefer the Kraft mac augmented with sharp cheddar, lots of feta, and a good dollop of jalapenos, along with masses of garlic. now THAT is the breakfast of champions!

Obligatory-

Jane, please come back!

Hmmm...

I prefer to make standard "mac & cheese" w. white sauce & velveeta... but add a chopped Vidalia onion & large green bell pepper. Some garlic powder & onion salt. Comes out nice & gooey; the chopped pepper adds some pleasant texture. Can't see adding tuna, but might incorporate chilis or jalopenos next time 'round.

Happy guest-blogging!
:)

My eyes glaze over at recipe blogging. I like to eat but hate to cook. I'll occasionally look up a recipe if I want to make something specific, but just reading a recipe? I don't get it. My mom and husband both read cookbooks for fun though, so I assume there are people out there that enjoy the recipe posts.

(Obligatory disclaimer: Of course, if Jane enjoys posting them, that's reason enough for their existence, since it's her blog.)

I forgot to mention in the post that Jane's blueberry buckle was indeed tasty tasty. It sat near my desk and hers and I ate about sixteen pieces of it, and now need a wheelbarrow for my gut.

So, Contributor A, when will have the pleasure of reading another post by you?

Anyone ever talk to someone who seems rational, is a nice person, etc. but has an entirely different world view which colors all their thinking? We've met some of them in these comments, but we will never understand their thinking. And I know that they have the same view of us: how can someone so nice be a libertarian/independent/conservative/republican/non-democrat?

Contributor A writes and thinks well, as does Contributor B, but neither of them has had the experiences I've had, so their thinking comes at me from a different direction. Their unstated assumptions are not the same as my unstated assumptions, so any arguments we threw at each other sailed completely past. Please be alert to that as you read whatever Contributor A has to offer. Rest assured, it will be thought-provoking.

Jane is probably off vacation in the Hamptons now that she was mentioned in John Leo's column in US News & World Report.
