2-2 in the 7th. Keep it up, guys!

Posted by: jason on October 9, 2005 10:47 PMDon't tell a lady to shut up, Alan. She's just expressing her God-given right to root for a team that outspends everyone else by a large margin; employs at least one, and probably several, players who take steroids; and is owned by the most miserable SOB on the planet!
Posted by: RMc on October 10, 2005 12:32 AMGO ASTROS!
What's that, wrong league? What is this "American League" of which you speak? I've never heard of it before, must be inferior.
Posted by: Timothy on October 10, 2005 03:00 AMRooting for the New York Yankees is morally wrong: discuss.
Posted by: RMc on October 10, 2005 06:05 AMTim, it's this league where they play a game quite like baseball, ignoring only the first rule in the rulebook (the one about 9 men).
Apologies, Jane, for me strong language.
If you prefer...Do be silent, Jane.
Posted by: alan on October 10, 2005 10:29 AMJane! Just when we were feeling good learning you'd survivied the subway, you have to go and ruin the feeling...
Posted by: David Walser on October 10, 2005 11:27 AMIt will be the Chi Sox and Cards in the World Series and the Sox will win in six. There, I spoiled the ending. Sorry, but now you can concetrate on the reborn Jets and their new-old quarterback.
Posted by: josh on October 10, 2005 12:12 PMDear God, I hope Jane's from NY. Surely it is a sin for anyone else to root for the demonic Yankee horde.
Posted by: John Salmon on October 10, 2005 01:20 PMJohn,
I grew up within walking distance of Jane in NYC and I can assure you that even those of us who ARE NY'ers dislike rooting for the Yankee Horde!
Of course, I'm a Mets fan, which is hardly any better.
Go White Sox!!!
Posted by: Kate on October 10, 2005 03:23 PMOk Jane, you can start talking again.
WOOHOO!
Hell, this almost makes up for the crap that the Dodgers came up with this year.
Posted by: alan on October 11, 2005 12:03 AMOK, so you wanted them to go. They're gone. Now what? You want they should come back?
Posted by: Mister Snitch! on October 11, 2005 03:34 AMKind of felt bad for Torre, though. Perhaps he is only a sub-demon.
Posted by: John Salmon on October 11, 2005 11:30 AMOh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light...
Ah, so much easier when it's all over.
How anyone can root for the Yankees is beyond me (RMc -- to pick up your thread ...). Modern baseball has many very public means by which to field a competitive team; indeed, general managers (those writing the checks) are nearly as well-known as their on-field collegues. The Yankee franchise cobbles together their team not unlike a movie star goes shopping: I like, I get. Brian Cashman (the NY GM) has been doling out millions all season long in a fruitless quest to buy success. But even his highest ticket "unit" -- pitcher Randy Johnson, who had some success late in the year -- tanked in the playoffs.
I suppose most fans just root for their team during a game -- or maybe over a season if they're dedicated -- but since baseball has anything but a level playing field I find solice in rooting for the little guys (in my case, the small market "Moneyball" Oakland A's) who *have* to be smart to be competitive. I suppose everyone loves a winner but if you care the slightest about *how* you win I don't see how you could cheer for The Monarchy of Baseball. That these brainless spendthrifts are referred to as "yankees" strikes me as wickedly ironic.
