Dungeons and Dragons: the Devil's tool.
Posted by Jane Galt at December 14, 2005 10:18 AM | TrackBack | Technorati inbound linksThanks -- twenty years ago my eldest son spent a lot of time with much older kids playing D&D, and I worried. I really did. (Hmm, and now he's working on his PhuD in classics at Columbia -- maybe I was right to worry. But I've sent him the link, and I thank you.) Meanwhile, my own reaction is to type things like
javascript:alert(document.embeds[0].CurrentFrame())
and (rather randomly)
javascript:with(document.embeds[0]){GotoFrame(1000);Play();}
into the address bar with that document showing. Such is the world of the geek.

Posted by: Eric Anondson on December 14, 2005 12:22 PMHmm...the root domain (http://starterupsteve.com/) has someone, possibly Steve, giving all passers by a Toby Tall salute. That about captures the attitude, I guess.
More seriously, the Bible actually does have some pretty withering commentary on dabbling in principles of witchcraft irregardless of setting. However most of the Christian community has forgotten this along with other large chunks of the scriptural writings, so it doesn't come up very often these days.
Aside from that, D&D can be much like any other involving and time-intensive hobby: if you get sucked into it to the point where it begins to consume your life, some really unsettling psycological tripping can beging to occur and literally wreck a person. By comparison, some people have gotten so deep into a video game that their eating habits went to pieces and sleep was abandoned for excessive periods...until finally the heart said "that's it, I'm outta here" and just like that: a dead guy. As I recall, this happened (again) at a South Korean Internet cafe just a few weeks ago.
Fantasy worlds are diversions and should be kept explicitly temporary and time-disciplined. The human mind was designed to live in the real one.

Ah-ha! So that's where it came from. I thought I recognized those voices from the "Boot to the Head" martial arts spoof.
Posted by: anony-mouse on December 14, 2005 05:18 PMToo much info:
The original was made by the Dead Alewives, and was just an audio sketch. Apparently, deadalewives.com no longer exists (or, rather, the domain lapsed and is now an ad page).
The same thing, but with characters from the video game Summoner (this was an "easter egg" included in the game):

Posted by: AFFA on December 14, 2005 08:44 PMYou know, Gary Gygax is still around too.
Posted by: Stephen M (Ethesis) on December 14, 2005 09:39 PMForget D&D, it's Mazes And Monster's we've got to worry about!
Posted by: Dave Munger on December 15, 2005 09:24 PMGeez, Jane. When I clicked the link, my employer's NetNanny brought up the Screen of Threatened Summary Termination on the grounds that it was a porn site. You gotta give us some warning.
There's nothing risque in that link, unless you get hot for 8-bit video game characters who pretend to be wizards.
Posted by: Jane Galt on December 16, 2005 11:57 AMThe link itself, no. The rest of the domain...definitely.
