Bleg

A friend of mine is thinking about starting a weblog. I have graciously volunteered to host this weblog, but she wants her own domain name. Can someone give me simple instructions for setting up a new weblog within my movable type installation, but with a different domain name? Or is this just impossible?

That depends on your web host. If your account allows multiple domains, register the domain, and have them host it in your directory. Then log in to MT, and set up a new blog with the paths to the new domain. I'm hosting several blogs off my MT installation (all of which except one are non-public). Caution, though--this is all based on version 2.661 of MT. I don't know if it's still the case with version 3.

Also note that both blogs will share the same data base, so that they'll share post numbers as well (meaning that the post number will be indicative of how many posts have been made to both blogs, not just Asymmetrical Information). You can get around this with a separate MT installation and data base for the other blog.

Isn't Blogger still free. She should just waltz over there, no?

Garth, that's like saying someone should just waltz over to McDonalds instead of offering to have them over for dinner.

Is the desire to host with you a matter of avoiding complexity/hassle or a matter of cost? If it is the former case... As a result of the popularity of blogging, a number of the geekier hosting services are now offering free and automatic blog installations. Your friend might want to look into that. Dreamhost.com is such an example (started by people from my alma mater, so slight bias here) where they provide free domain registration and WordPress installation for their customers.

As for the suggestion about Blogger, if you use Blogger with a domain name, it doesn't look *that* bad...

She wants her own domain, so blogspot isn't an option. Otherwise, I'd just set her up there.

Jane, she can go on Typepad (Moveable Type for dummies like me) - and get her own domain name to use with that. (Called domain mapping.)

Typepad is very easy to use. I am living proof!

I'm with KL, Dreamhost is pretty great. It has an easy web based administrative interface, has great customer service, is cheap, and has "one click" installs of goodies like Wordpress.

The one thing you don't want is to be your friend's sys admin, so don't host it on your server if you can help it.
